1. Teaching Philosophy

I believe the role of a music tutor is to provide any encouragement, information and practical support that a student may require to develop and explore their own enjoyment of music, whether that's as a hobby or a serious creative practice. This approach requires students to be intrinsically motivated, so I do recommend against soliciting music lessons on behalf of someone who is not interested in learning an instrument.

Instruments Available:
- Piano / Keyboard
- Drum Kit
- Electric and Acoustic Guitar
- Electric Bass
- Ukulele
- DAW / Songwriting

If you don't have your own instrument, you can still come and try any of these. I also offer freeform, multi-instrumental, self-directed sessions, which tend to suit people who are very young, neurodivergent, and/or insatiably curious.

Musical Styles
My favourite musical genres include pop, indie, rock, jazz, and ambient, and the music I like most tends to be creative or funny or weird or political but still catchy and well-produced.
Some albums that I love are UTOPIA NOW! by Rosie Tucker, Asphalt Meadows by Death Cab for Cutie, and Home Video by Lucy Dacus. You can listen to some bits and pieces of music I've made at https://butterflywife.com/snacks.

2. Schedule and Pricing

Schedule:
During the holidays, lessons happen on an ad-hoc basis, although you can book multiple lessons in advance. 30, 40, and 60 minute slots are available from 1-7pm on Monday to Saturday.
During the school term, I have regular 40 or 60 minute slots on weekday afternoons & evenings from 2-7pm. These are booked in advance each term, with payment due by the end of Week 1.
Students can join partway through a term; prices are adjusted accordingly and payment is due by Friday of the week of their first lesson.

Pricing:
30m - $60 (holidays only)
40m - $75 ($750/term)
60m - $100 ($1000/term)

3. Payment & Cancellations

If you cancel a lesson:
No refund. Providing more notice increases the chance of organising a catch-up lesson at no extra cost, but this is not guaranteed.

If I cancel a lesson you've already paid for:
We'll try to book a catch-up, but if we can't you will be provided with a lesson credit, which you can redeem for an extra lesson or use to reduce your next term cost.
If you have a lesson credit and don't want to book any more lessons, I'll refund you the money.

Payment Methods & Schedule:
Payments can be cash or bank transfer.
- Holiday lessons: Must be paid in advance or upon arrival.
- Term Lessons: Ideally each term is paid for by Friday of Week 1, but if needed you can pay for half in Week 1 and half in Week 5.
